Smartwatches are glorious little spies. They log steps, heartbeats, sleep cycles, GPS tracks, stress scores, period and its symptoms, who you texted last night, and sometimes, if you let them, even which apps you open and when. Each of those metrics usually lives in its own silo: the watch firmware, the companion phone app, a cloud backup (which I’d love to remind it’s just someone else’s pocket if you do not secure it), and often third-party analytics or health apps that ask for just one permission “to improve your experience.” That “one” permission is rarely one-and-done: it becomes many entry points for anyone who can compromise one of the pieces.
Why that matters: a breach of any single app or cloud datastore can leak details that are far more sensitive than “how many steps you took”.
It can reveal where you live and work, when you travel, your sleep/wake pattern (useful to know when you’re away), your medical markers (heart rate anomalies, menstrual cycle data), and behavioral fingerprints that can turn social engineering into a lock-picking tool.
Regulators have been clear that connected health data is covered by breach rules; device and app makers that collect health information are now squarely in the crosshairs of privacy enforcement – that has been stated by the Federal Trade Commission in 2021.
Tiny sensors, big inferences
Don’t be comforted by “it’s only an accelerometer” or “it’s just step data”.
Research has repeatedly shown that motion and sensor telemetry can be used to infer surprisingly sensitive things: keystrokes, activity types, app usage, and even medical events. An attacker who can collect raw sensor streams (or traffic metadata from Bluetooth syncs) can reconstruct actions and profiles that the wearer thought were private.
Even encrypted Bluetooth traffic leaks patterns: packet sizes and timing can reveal which app was opened or whether a medical measurement was recorded. In short, metadata is a side channel that whispers secrets.

The chain: app permissions → cloud backups → phishing → exfiltration
Here’s a realistic attack chain that’s simpler than you think:
- app compromise or poor configuration: a companion app, or a third-party “sleep analytics” plugin, is vulnerable or over-permissioned
- data aggregation: that app stores telemetry in the cloud (or uploads it to an analytics endpoint), often with weak access controls. Historical trends and location timelines are now harvestable. Evidence: multiple high-volume wearable data exposures in recent years show how large these troves can be – and this is not science fiction!
- phishing bootstraps the attack: using brand impersonation, attackers send perfectly forged emails (logos, UI copy, even spoofed domains) directing victims to a credential page or a malicious app update. Once credentials or MFA tokens are harvested, cloud stores and backups are trivial to access. Btw, brand impersonation is not hypothetical: it’s one of the most effective phishing vectors used today!
- exfiltration & abuse: with health and location data in hand, attackers can mount targeted scams (fake medical invoices), do credential stuffing/identity fraud, craft ipermegaultraconvincing spear-phishing that references your recent run or clinic visit, or, in a very extreme scenarios, blackmail
Attack techniques straight out of a spy novel (but real)
If you like nerdy details, as I do: researchers recently demonstrated possible ultrasonic and sensor-based covert channels that use wearables as receivers or transmitters, showing that air-gapped systems and ordinary devices can be co-opted for subtle exfiltration paths. Those attacks are complex and often need multiple preconditions, but they prove the principle: the more always-on endpoints you own, the more opportunities an attacker has to get creative.
I could cite an insulin pump hijacking by a researcher or just myself playing around with a glicemia reader skin sensor.. but that’s not the day!
Practical takeaways: what companies and users should do now
- treat wearable telemetry as sensitive data: health markers, location trails, and behavioral logs deserve the same protection as medical records. Compliance teams: add wearables to your data inventory now!
- minimize what apps collect: don’t grant broad permissions to third-party apps; limit cloud uploads and review privacy settings regularly – same applies for those food tracking connected apps that ask for meal pictures upload
- protect the brand perimeter: train people to spot logo/UX spoofing and credential harvesting attempts, those fake “update your wearable” or “verify your account” emails are engineered to bypass suspicion – that’s where we help with advanced and ipermegaultra-realistic phishing simulations!
- simulate realistic phishing: random generic tests are fine, but the most valuable learning happens when simulations use contextual data (referencing a recent device alert or a plausible app update). That is the same trick attackers use in the wild. If your training isn’t context-aware and AI-resistant, it’s not preparing your people for what will actually hit their inboxes
So, that’s how your smartwatch can track anything about you. And you’re consenting this, because digital commodities are sooooo good!
