OpenAI’s newest shopping research tool is impressive. It streamlines decisions, analyses product categories, and reduces friction!
But friction isn’t just a UX hurdle, it’s a security control. Remove too much of it, and you open the gates to a new family of attacks.

The rise of prompt hijacking in holiday season

When an AI agent is designed to gather preferences, filter product lists, and craft recommendations, it becomes the perfect surface for prompt hijacking.
And the holiday rush amplifies everything: urgency, trust, cognitive overload. Attackers know exactly when humans stop paying attention.

So, Prompt hijacking is no longer just “manipulating an LLM with clever wording”.
During Black Friday it becomes a full-chain, end-to-end exploitation vector:

• injection in shopping assistants
• malicious product redirection
• affiliate abuse
• counterfeit supply-chain manipulation
• poisoned URLs embedded into “AI-curated buying guides”

A poisoned prompt can subtly rewrite a user’s buying experience and most people will blame the store, not the model.

The real problem: holiday-period targeting becomes laser-precise

Attackers don’t fire blindly anymore.
They use datasets leaked throughout the year, often containing email aliases like: [email protected]

These aliases reveal everything: which platforms a user subscribes to, which brands they follow, which loyalty programs they joined, and which categories they’re statistically likely to buy from during Black Friday.

That data is then cross-matched with past breach dumps, OSINT patterns, and historical purchase behaviour.
Suddenly, the campaign is not random, it’s fuc**ing personalized at weapon-grade precision!

Imagine the chain:

  1. attacker gathers leaked alias databases
    They identify 50,000+ emails tied to Amazon, Shein, Decathlon, MediaMarkt, Target, or local retailers.
  2. they categorize buyers by shopping intent
    Electronics, gaming, cosmetics, clothing, home improvement, all inferred by alias patterns or newsletter habits.
  3. they craft AI-shopping-assistant “clone updates”
    Fake emails that appear to come from the new OpenAI shopping feature, suggesting “updated buying guides.”
  4. inside the guides?
    Poisoned links, fraudulent storefronts, counterfeit device listings, credential stealers disguised as “tracking dashboards,” and of course, malware-rigged PDF comparison charts.

This isn’t phishing anymore.
This is precision-engineered consumer manipulation, built on top of AI trust.

A realistic campaign scenario

A user who frequently buys gaming gear receives:

Subject: “Your personalized Black Friday GPU Guide is ready”

The email includes a GPT-style summary (premium users can now schedule activities):

“We analyzed 14 cards across price brackets and selected the best performance-per-euro models.”

Everything feels authentic: the formatting, the tone, the product images, the offers.

But the links redirect to a cloned store.
The checkout form steals credit cards.
The “download comparison chart” installs a macOS RAT disguised as a PDF viewer.
The follow-up email invites the user to “track shipment” via a fake DHL dashboard collecting credentials.

All built from leaked alias data + prompt-poisoned templates + AI-authentic tone.

Why this threat matters

AI-based shopping tools are trained to assist, not defend; and when hijacked, they amplify harmful intent with frightening scale.
And Black Friday magnifies human vulnerability: speed, excitement, impulsiveness.

So, today, attackers don’t need technical depth anymore: they just need timing, data-mining, and a malicious instruction embedded in an AI that users trust.

What companies should do right now?

Any organisation handling customers, retail, logistics, or payment data should immediately:

• model high-volume social engineering campaigns
• scan for leaked aliases referencing their brand
• monitor for fake “AI shopping assistant” emails
• protect employees internally from running poisoned buying guides
• inform customers that no “AI-generated recommendations” will ever require login
